Data Analytics is a modern discipline with high demand in industry and academia for the foreseeable future. A data analyst may be employed with many different types of industries, from healthcare providers to retail stores to investment companies. A data analyst often works within a team to collect and analyze a variety of data. Their tasks include many of the following:

  • Receive data from relevant resources and tools providing data reports for management.
  • Interpret results using statistical tools and technique.
  • Identify trends and patterns to help boost the business.
  • Provide data reports for management.
  • Communicate and collaborate with other team members, including the marketing team or executives.
  • Create and maintain databases and data systems.

SHU offers the Data Analytics program to train data-oriented students for such a career. The program consists of a hybrid between a traditional applied mathematics degree (with emphasis on statistics) and Computer Information Systems classes. The student who graduates with a Data Analytics degree will be proficient in mathematics, statistical design, and computing. In addition, graduates will also be qualified for other related careers such as actuarial science, cybermetrics, and economics. These students will be well positioned to join the rapidly growing field of statistics. Of course, attainment of such a degree also includes all of the other benefits of a SHU experience like small class sizes, an ethical, warm and inclusive campus atmosphere, high faculty-to-student ratio, teaching-oriented faculty, and the ability to participate in collegiate athletics while pursuing the degree.

SHU recently received a $1.5 million grant from the National Science Foundation to support low-income STEM majors with scholarships and academic support.
