SHU Day of Giving – Academic Programs

Siena Heights University is one of the only liberal arts colleges or universities in the region to offer a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering. This is an emerging career field, with the State of Michigan job outlook for environmental engineers looking very promising.

Meeting a need for both Environmental Science and Engineering majors, the program will help prepare students to enter a workforce that has an ever-demanding need for environmental engineers. In fact, STEM-related jobs are projected to increase by more than a million from 2012-22, according to the Occupational Outlook Quarterly.

In developing the major, Siena Heights consulted with industry leaders in the Ann Arbor and Detroit areas. Michigan alone is projected to demand 274,000 new STEM jobs by 2018, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates starting median salaries in the U.S. range from $55,000-$70,000.

Siena Heights University was recently awarded a $1.5 million grant from the National Science Foundation to support qualifying low-income STEM students with scholarships and academic assistance.

Siena Heights University was also recently awarded a $25,000 grant from the Oak Foundation to study Ramsdell Nature Park. The 180-acre Lenawee County park with rolling hills, tallgrass prairies, and small ponds is home to a rich variety of insects, amphibians, birds, mammals, and flora.
