The Language Arts major builds on the Elementary Teacher Certification program with its focus on all forms of communication — listening, speaking, reading, writing, viewing, and visually representing.
The Language Arts program focuses on incorporating literacy across the curriculum in multiple content areas. An element unique to the Language Arts program is exploration and integration of the arts. A K-12 Reading Specialist degree/certification is offered at the graduate level.
The Language Arts major includes courses such as Content Area Reading, Teaching Writing, Oral Interpretation of Children’s Literature, Adolescent Literature and Strategies for Teaching Language Arts. Students also select electives from English, Theater, Art and Music. Options include: Introduction to Journalism, Introduction to Music and Film Study and Analysis. Interested students may add a Theater concentration by completing extra courses.
Along with student teaching, Language Arts majors complete 30 hours collaborating with a local language arts educator. As a senior project, students complete a cross curricular unit to be utilized during student teaching.
