Siena Heights University and Community College of Baltimore County (Md.) have recently partnered to offer a unique online bachelor’s degree opportunity for Interpreter Preparation graduates.

The articulation agreement between the two institutions allows CCBC Interpreter Preparation graduates the opportunity to complete a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Sign Language Interpreting with SHU.

The Bachelor of Applied Science degree is a career-oriented degree designed for professionals with allied health, public safety, technical, or vocational training and experience, and graduates of two-year occupational programs. The BAS degree is the leading off-campus program offered since the early 1970s.

“We are excited to expand online degree completion opportunities to CCBC graduates through the BAS degree,” said Deborah Carter, SHU’s dean for the College for Professional Studies. “The BAS degree builds on the specialized major brought to Siena Heights University and broadens the student’s intellectual horizons. It is designed to take the candidate’s multi-faceted educational, training and work history fully into account in developing his/her program.”

“The more we are able to increase options for our students to further their education, the better,” said Sandra Brown, CCBC’s Interpreter Prep coordinator. “Partnering with SHU gives our students the convenience of earning their bachelor’s degree online, which is a bonus considering their often busy schedules. And now that there is requirement for a bachelor's degree before going for national certification as an interpreter, this gives our students another option to complete that degree.”

The CCBC Associate in Applied Science Interpreter Preparation degree transfers and qualifies as the BAS major at SHU. No additional coursework toward the major is required. Candidates may transfer up to 90 semester hours of credit from their associate degree program, other college study, college-equivalent military, corporate or professional training and/or CLEP testing. SHU also offers a minor in Professional Communication online that is customized to working adult professionals and can be completed within their Siena Heights residency.

U.S. News and World Report recognized Siena Heights University’s Distance Learning Program in its 2014 Best Online Bachelor's Programs rankings. SHU has offered online bachelor's degree programs since 2004.
