Text Box: Please choose Windows XP Professional or Vista for your operating system and Microsoft Office for word processing, spreadsheets, and other programs.
All student computers must have current anti-virus and anti-spyware software installed  with valid licenses for definition updates.
If you need further help with any of these requirements, please contact our Help Desk at 517.264.7655, or send a brief email to helpdesk@sienahts.edu.
Your computer will not work on our network until it has been registered.  Our Help Desk technicians will register your computer, and if necessary, assist you with the installation of a wireless card in your notebook, or a wireless USB adaptor in your desktop.   Internal wireless cards for desktops normally should be installed by an outside store or technician.
Please bring your computer and everything that came with your wireless product to the Help Desk. If you have a desktop unit, bring only the CPU tower, the wireless USB unit, software, and instructions.
The Help Desk will be open extended hours during Welcome Weekend as well as the first week of school to assist with the setup of your computer.
We usually will complete your computer in several hours or fewer, but plan on leaving it for up to a day or so during the busiest times.

SHU students are not required to buy a computer.  SHU has modern computer labs available  until 11 PM  most weekdays, and generous hours on the weekends.  Computers are also available twenty-four hours per day in the residence hall.
Student ownership of a computer, especially a wireless notebook, is however strongly encouraged.
Wireless notebooks are able to connect to the internet anywhere on campus.  Desktop computers also can get online with a wireless card or USB adaptor.
Student computers in the residence halls connect to the network/ internet only through the wireless system.  Dialup through the SHU campus phone system is discouraged.
Campus Village residents access the internet with direct wired connections, but wireless notebooks still need to be registered for use on campus.
Computers need to be able to run Windows XP Professional and have either built-in wireless capability, a wireless card or a wireless USB adaptor.  Computer stores can provide advice, and will usually have wireless products in stock.  Most name brand wireless products will work on our system.  If  buying a new computer, purchase a name brand notebook with built-in wireless capability and the best warranty available.  We recommend and use Dell.  Click on the Dell link on our CSS network web page for special  SHU  Dell deals.

Our wireless network offers both encrypted (more secure) connections, as well as unencrypted.  We will install the more secure version on computers that are able to support it, as determined at the time of installation. If you have anti-virus software that needs to be installed, our techs can do this for you at your own risk. If your computer has been running without this protection, it is likely full of viruses, and after installation, it might run slowly or exhibit other problems.
· All students will receive an email address, space on our server for data, and a unique username and password.
· We restrict Peer to Peer traffic such as Kazaa and Ares to protect our network, as well as for ethical reasons.
·  Students are required to use all SHU computing  resources within the guidelines of the Saints Guide and Student Conduct Manual, as well as the SHU Ecommunications policy.

 · 2.4 gigahertz phones and other wireless routers and equipment are not allowed on campus, as they interfere with the wireless network. 900 megahertz or 5 gigahertz phones are recommended.
· We welcome calls or questions from students and parents about our services.  We are pleased that you have chosen Siena Heights for your education, and hope that you enjoy your “computing experience” while here.
