Teaching Statement
To engage, encourage, and empower. My aim as a teacher is to help each student discover their own individual expression by exposure to the foundations, use of materials, contemporary issues and history of art.

Educators are role models and as an educator being engaged and excited about my own artwork is very important; it brings the studio a sense of passion and energy that is easily communicated to the student. I require a high level of skill and engagement as well as a grounded understanding of material and process. I expect the student to gain strong observational skills through group critiques and individual meetings, which in turn, will add to their ability to self-critique, verbalize and write about their work.

In the studio/classroom I want students to feel freedom to explore ideas and materials, not always focusing on an end product but to gain an understanding for the content which lies in the process.

A leader is best
When people barely know he exists
Not so good when people obey and acclaim him
Worse when they despise him.
Fail to honor the people,
They fail to honor you.
But of a good leader, who talks little,
When his work is done, his aim fulfulled,
They will say, "We did this ourselves."
-Lao Tzu
