SHU Offers Criminal Justice Degree at MCCC
5/29/2013 10:45:00 AM by Doug

From left: Monroe County Community College President Dr. David Nixon; SHU Dean of the College for Professional Student Deb Carter; MCCC Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice Penny Dunn; Director of the SHU Criminal Justice program Dr. Danielle "Elly" Teunion-Smith; SHU President Sister Peg Albert, OP, PhD; and MCCC Dean of the Humanities/Social Sciences Division Dr. Paul Hedeen.

Students at Monroe County Community College can now earn a bachelor of arts in criminal justice from Siena Heights University on the MCCC campus. MCCC President Dr. David Nixon and SHU President Sister Peg Albert, OP, PhD, officially announced the launch of the new program at a May 29 press conference at MCCC.

“We are pleased to partner with Siena Heights University to offer students the opportunity to earn a four-year degree right here on our campus in a high-demand field that is broad and evolving,” said MCCC President Dr. David Nixon.

“We are seeing a greater demand for criminal justice graduates in our workforce – which is exemplified by a 95 percent job placement rate for our graduates in this area – and this opportunity provides students a seamless transition from Monroe County Community College to Siena Heights,” said President Albert. “This collaboration is yet another fine example of the strong educational partnership we have with Monroe County Community College.”

Siena Heights University currently offers the criminal justice major on its main Adrian campus as well as at its degree completion center at Jackson Community College in Jackson, Mich.

According to SHU's Director of the criminal justice program Dr. Danielle "Elly" Teunion-Smith, SHU’s program has professional faculty members with practical experience — as well as smaller class sizes and numerous individually tailored internship possibilities, in and outside of the community, to mention just a few.

Employers at all levels of criminal justice, whether local, state or federal, are seeking out educated professionals to fill a variety of positions. The push for community policing, individual accountability, higher educational standards and innovative policing strategies is driving this trend.

Career opportunities with a criminal justice degree include jobs such as crime scene investigator, probation or parole officer, federal officer (ATF, DEA, FBI, CIA, Secret Service, etc.), private security officer, police officer, U.S. Marshal, court clerk, corrections officer, bailiff, customs agent, paralegal and many more.

The criminal justice degree prepares students to embark on a variety of career paths in law enforcement and in the legal system. Students can complete an associate degree at MCCC as well as additional coursework and ultimately transfer up to 90 credit hours – the equivalent about three years of full-time course work – toward the 120 hours required to complete the degree. Classes are offered in the evening and in online formats.
