Siena Heights University was ranked among the top 50 institutions in the nation – including the top private college or university in Michigan – as a Best Online Program for Veterans by U.S. News & World Report. This is the second year that U.S. News & World Report has established this ranking, with Siena Heights tying for 47th.

The methodology is based on participation/service in various veteran-related programs and academic quality attributes from SHU's standing as a Best Online Bachelor Degree Program, which was released earlier this year.

“Veterans and active-duty service members face unique challenges as students, from transitioning between bases and grappling with deployment to balancing work and family life upon return,” said Robert Morse, director of data research for U.S. News. “The Best Online Programs for Veterans are high-quality programs that also offer educational benefits and flexibility for veterans pursuing a degree.”

“We are pleased to be recognized as a ‘US News & World Report’s Best Online Program for Veterans,’ ” said SHU Dean of the College for Professional Studies Deborah Carter. “Siena Heights University strives to be a welcoming educational environment for our veterans. Our veterans officer, Shontalette Robinson, as well as our online academic advisors and student support staff, deliver great care, concern and personal attention to each of our student veterans. They exemplify student service that exceed expectations, a core value of Siena Heights University.”

To be ranked, an online degree program had to report participation in key programs that offer educational benefits to people with military service. The rankings methodology requires programs to belong to institutions that are certified for the GI Bill. They must also belong to schools participating in the Yellow Ribbon Program. All schools evaluated must have been awarded a numerical rank in the overall 2014 U.S. News Best Online Programs rankings.

Programs were assessed for various factors, including affordability, faculty credentials, student services and reputation. Only regionally accredited degree-granting programs that were predominantly online were considered.

SHU has offered online bachelor’s degree programs since 2004.
