Student WorkDegrees OfferedOutcomesTravel Program

The Painting Program provides students with the opportunity to develop a broad range of knowledge, skills and competencies in the painting medium. These include skills in the use of various media including, gouache, watercolor, acrylic, oil and mixed-media collage. Normally students begin painting using a water-based medium (gouache or acrylic); later courses integrate the use of oils and watercolor, as well as experimental techniques. Students learn the qualities of various pigments, preparation of supports and appropriate use of painting mediums. Students begin painting from still life in a naturalistic manner and are encouraged to develop a broader more personalized, stylistic and conceptual approach.

The painting program offers students the opportunity to develop and form a personal identity as an artist. Students are also expected to research historic and contemporary artists as part of extensive journaling. Slide lectures and videos, museum and gallery visits, and/or guest artists supplement the regular class program.
