Assists Director of Public Safety by providing supervision of Public Safety staff while performing additional duties that provide for a safe campus environment. Act as interim director of Public Safety when needed.
Assists other Public Safety staff on duty by supervising daily work details, advising, counseling, training and relaying information from Director of Public Safety. Shall be responsible for the daily management of the Department of Public Safety in the absence of the Deputy Director and Captain. Maintains security of campus buildings, property, students and visitors by circulation and surveying assigned area(s). Maintains communication with Director about staff and community. Maintains communications with resident life staff for the benefit of the community as a whole. Responds to requests for assistance from the Siena community. Assist the Director with campus investigations. Assist Director with payroll processing. Responsible for ensuring the fire safety checks are complete and accurate. Shall maintain a good working relationship with outside emergency response agencies. Will provide this service in the absence of the higher ranked command staff. Assists and backs up resident life staff when needed. Completes reports, logs, and documentation as directed. Helps the director with scheduling. Makes sure shifts are covered. Responds to requests for assistance in emergencies, maintains contact with switchboard, and directs emergency response, if necessary. Assumes control of incident and directs communications with on campus and off campus authorities if necessary. Calls in Public Safety staff as needed to handle the situation. Ensures accurate reporting per department procedures. Responsible for assisting Director and/or implementing preventative programming. Responsible to attend judicial-board hearings and court when requested to do so. Assist with the training of new staff members, including managing the FTO program. Shall be the final decision as to the towing of a vehicle from the Siena Heights property in the absence of the director. Will assist with staff meetings. Assist Director with updating and enforcing department procedures. Shares the responsibility of enforcing the Department of Public Safety’s policies and procedures by informing the Director of any violations. Will issue verbal and/or written warnings as needed and communicate with the director concerning such. Responsible for managing the day to day administration of the report writing and computer aided dispatch software. Assists the Assistant Director with the CCTV system management. Assist Deputy Director, and Captain with creation and implementation of Event Standard Operating Procedures. Assist Deputy Director with patrol and special event public safety scheduling. Maintain and oversee the FTO program. Other duties within scope of Department’s responsibilities as defined by Director of Public Safety.
High school graduate or equivalent. Prefer two years of post secondary education and/or prior management or supervisory experience. Experience in law enforcement, security or related field desirable. Must be knowledgeable about university public safety policy and procedures, be able to respond to changing priorities, and direct the work of others. Ability to communicate clearly, verbally and in writing, with others. Ability to keep calm in emergencies or conditions where others are agitated. First aid, AED and CPR certified. Must be able to take control of volatile situations. Fire safety certified.
