Volunteer Opportunities

One of the core values of our Dominican heritage is serving one another. Listed below are several agencies where you can be the hands and feet of Jesus. We would love to hear about your experience so please contact a member of the Campus Ministry team after you have completed your volunteer commitment.

COMMUNITY ACTION AGENCY

Needs: Intake of people requesting services, unload and distribute food from truck
Time: Afternoons, 1-3 p.m.; time varies

DAILY BREAD OF LENAWEE
302 S. Tecumseh, Adrian 517-266-0937 
Needs: Prepare and serve food
Time: Tues., Thurs., Fri., Sat., Sun. noon-2 p.m.
Other: Need to take a one evening food handlers course

DAYBREAK ADULT DAY SERVICES

Needs: Help care for elderly adults in a day service facility and coordinate activities
Time: Monday to Friday, daytime

DEPARTMENT ON AGING 
1040 S. Winter St. 517-264-5280 (Respite and medical transportation) and 517263-3585 (Senior Center director for other programs)
Needs: Respite care for full time caregivers (can be paid); connection with senior centers in town (many different needs), home delivered meal drivers and medical transportation (will be reimbursed for mileage).
Time: most are flexible; meal delivery Sunday 11 a.m.-noon.

DOMINICAN
 LIFE CENTER

Needs: Variety of ways to help older sisters: visiting, reading, computer instruction, wheelchair rides…
Time: Flexible

GOODWILL INDUSTRIES

Needs: Help with taking donations, stocking store, etc.
Time: Store M-S, 8:30 am-8 pm, Plant M-F, 8 am-4 pm

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY

Needs: Help with construction of local homes 
Time: Saturdays 9 am-3 pm

HOPE COMMUNITY CENTER
(Day program for adults who are physically, mentally or emotionally challenged)

Needs: Depending on your major, very flexible programming and teaching classes in your area possible.  Volunteers work with the members in educational, recreation or craft activities. 
Time: M-F, 9 am-3 pm, also options in the evenings to take folks to programs 

LENAWEE HUMANE SOCIETY

Needs: Individual attention to animals, walking, bathing, etc.
Time: T-F 9 am-5 pm, Sat. 9 am-3 pm

LENAWEE INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL DISTRICT – SPECIAL NEED ADULT CLASS
600 E. Beecher St. (In the Goodwill building) 517-265-1721 or 467-7480 
(Class for young adults with mental impairment, autism, etc.) 
Needs: Volunteers to serve as peers to interact socially with students, helps with their social, communication and community skills. Observation and training available. 
Time: M-F, regular school hours.

LENAWEE MEDICAL CARE

(Director of Therapeutic Recreation)
Needs: Variety including patient visiting, help with programs, do presentations. Volunteer orientation required, TB test and criminal background check.
Time: Any day, timing flexible.

Needs: Room visits, helping with games, exercises, letter writing, reading, taking 
residents out, etc. Open to groups coming for special projects, call ahead to plan.
Time: M-F, 9:30 am-4 pm, Sat/Sun, 1-4 pm

MICHIGAN WORKS

Needs: Tutors (GED) and mentors for at risk young adults, 16-21
Time: Tuesday evenings, 5-7 p.m.

THE NATURE CONSERVANCY
Ives Road Fen Reserve in Tecumseh, 517-456-8386
 
Needs:
 Outdoor, physical work with plants, trees, clean-up, etc.
Time: Usually Saturdays, though are some weekday programs

PROVINCIAL HOUSE
700 Lakeshire Trail, Adrian 517-263-0781 
Needs: Wide variety of options for working with senior residents 
Time: M-F, 8 am-5 pm

SALVATION ARMY
217 W. Church St., Adrian 517-265-2038 
Needs: Community Dinner: help with preparation, serving meals and clean up.
Time: Monday and especially Wednesday, 3:30-5:30 pm (call ahead)
Other: Also have needs for sorting clothing and food, M-F, 7 am-4 pm

SHARE THE WARMTH
Hosted at Salvation Army 217 W. Church St., Adrian

Needs: The homeless shelter runs December through March. 
Time: 6:45 pm-1 ammidnight-8 am or 6:45 pm-8 am daily
Other: Need for someone to do the laundry and bring snacks when they are running low.
