Environmental Sustainability and Identity: The Poetry of Wendy Rose and Works of Contemporary Environmentalists

 

Discussion will be led by Julieanna Frost and Heather Moody.

 

Julieanna will focus upon the environmental themes and issues of mixed-blood identity in selected poems of Wendy Rose from her work, Itch Like Crazy. Julieanna will explore identity issues and its connection to environmentalism. Dr. Rose heads the American Indian Studies Program at Fresno City College.

 

Heather will highlight works from Jared Diamond, reflecting upon the environmental impact of native cultures in relation to contemporary culture today and follow with exerpts from Bunyan Bryant, E.O. Wilson, Jeremy Rifkin, Paul Hawken and Amory and L. Hunter Lovins on the challenges in remaining connected to the global environment of today.

 

Heather Moody is Assistant Professor of Environmental Science at Siena Heights University.

Julieanna Frost is Assistant Professor of History at Concordia University.
