10/23/2009-Blue team evens series 2-2, forcing game five.

The Blue team wins a game plagued with errors and mistakes on both sides 3-2 and forces the decisive game five. Andy Maloney led the way for the Blue team with two RBI.

It is said that it is better to win ugly than it is to lose pretty. That is exactly what happened for the Blue team in a dramatic game four victory.

The Gold team struck first capitalizing on errors made by the Blue team. Kenny Sutter hit a shot that when between the legs of first baseman Dan Abbot which was the first link in as chain of errors for the Blue team. Sutter then attempted to reach second base when the throw from right field was mishandled and bounced into left field. Meanwhile, BJ Salazar who was on first base was able to come around and score. Sutter then made a break from third base when the throw from the Blue team’s left fielder sailed over the third baseman’s head and into the Gold dugout scoring Sutter.

The Gold team was then able to get runners on first and third with one out but relief pitcher Jake Sperry was able to close the door. The Gold team took a 2-0 lead into the fourth inning.

The Gold team’s starting pitcher Derek Chaffins was dealing the first three innings when the error bug bit the Gold team. The Blue team was able to load the bases on Chaffins when Maloney hit a shot into right-center scoring two runners and tying the game at two.

Jerry Bray replaced Chaffins in the fifth inning and was very effective against the Blue team’s hitters. Bray did manage to have one bad inning where a walk to Dan Abbott allowed David Wynkoop to score Abbott with a single up the middle. Abbott scored with authority by plowing over catch Jack Mackinnon, who was going after the throw in from Johnny Lyszczyk. Needless to say, scoring the winning run made up for Abbott’s error earlier in the game.

Sperry continued his dominance of the Gold team in his innings of work and was virtually un-hittable.

Chris Boertje followed Sperry and shut down the Gold team the end the game.

“We just had too many mistakes today,” Coach Cory Bergfeld said. “We had the lead but then there were some base running errors, errors in the field, walks by our pitchers, and we couldn’t get the timely hit and the Blue team was able to capitalize on our mistakes. It was an ugly game and the Blue team came out on top. We will learn from our mistakes and will be ready for game five and ready to win this thing for all of Ohio.”

Sperry picked up the win for the Blue team with Boertje earning the save. Bray took the loss for the Gold team.

Game five as of now will be played at 12 p.m Saturday afternoon at the SHU Baseball Field. This game is for the championship and bragging rights for the entire year.
